{"id":40,"date":"2024-05-16T16:05:38","date_gmt":"2024-05-16T16:05:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mtsu.edu\/alert4u\/?page_id=40"},"modified":"2026-04-15T05:10:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T05:10:35","slug":"active-shooter","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.mtsu.edu\/alert4u\/active-shooter\/","title":{"rendered":"Active Shooter on Campus Response Materials"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An active shooter on a university campus is a rare event, but faculty, staff and students need to be prepared. &nbsp; Being safe is a skill that can be learned, and the resources below can help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Profile of an Active Shooter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), \u201can Active Shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area; in most cases, active shooters use firearm(s) and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims.\u201d In active shooter situations, individuals must be prepared both mentally and physically to react in ways to respond before and after laws enforcement officials arrive on the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Respond<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Good practices for coping with an active shooter situation<br>(From the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/xlibrary\/assets\/active_shooter_booklet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of Homeland Security<\/a>)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"is-style-compact-list wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be aware of your environment and any possible dangers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are in an office, stay there and secure the door<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are in a hallway, get into a room and secure the door<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As a last resort, attempt to take the active shooter down.
