January 15, 2026 – Email #5 /canvas/2026/01/15/january-15-2026-email-5/ Thu, 15 Jan 2026 15:07:06 +0000 /canvas/?p=1059 Good Morning, Faculty Colleagues –

I’m sharing two last-minute Canvas reminders as we begin the new year:

  1. You shoulddeliveryour Spring 2026 courses in D2L if you are not registered with the Canvas team as a Spring 2026 early adopter.
    • You will now see empty Spring 2026 course shells in Canvas, butstudents will not. These shells enable you to experiment with content creation, importing, and design, along with LMS navigation (as noted in my previous updates, whichyou can review here). They are not live courses.
  2. Please communicate clearly and directly with students regarding LMS content, since a very limited number of MTSU courses will be hosted in Canvas for Spring 2026. As you may remember, our early adopters will help us identify problems or issues that may affect other faculty in Summer 2026 and beyond.

If you have questions, please contact me directly or e-mail our team at canvas@mtsu.edu. You can also visit the Canvas implementation website at  for more information regarding timelines, Canvas resources, , and more.

Best wishes for a smooth start to the Spring 2026 semester!

I hope that the semester is winding down smoothly, and I hope to see many of you at commencement this weekend.

Our Canvas implementation is quickly accelerating, and I’m sending along one final set of updates for 2025.

  1. About 225 early adopter courses are live in Canvas for Spring 2026, so special thanks to those of you getting a head start on our LMS transition. For everyone else, all MTSU courses will be in Canvas starting inSummer 2026.
  2. I strongly encourage you to dive into Canvas workshops, navigation, resources, and courses available through theCanvas project website, specifically thefaculty resources page. While Canvas is increasingly intuitive with consistent use, do not underestimate the learning curve involved for many of us.Inshort, some dedicated time daily or weekly will go a long way.The Center for Teaching & Mentoring has already hosted and archived a range of, with much more coming in Spring 2026.
  3. Finally, you can find details regarding Canvas course migration/imports. Many of you have asked specifically about how your courses will be impacted for Summer/Fall 2026, and this document provides a great summary.

That’s all for 2025! I wish each of you a restful and celebratory holiday season. Thank you for all that you do for MTSU and our faculty and students. Feel free to contact me anytime that I can assist.

Remember that you can always get Canvas information on our website, and details on upcoming training (along with previously recorded sessions) at the .

Three quick updates:

  1. Our campus is right in the thick of Canvas course migrations, with a focus on our 60+ “early adopters” teaching over 100 courses in Canvas for Spring 2026. This important group of faculty will help identify opportunities for improvement in course migrations and the broader Canvas implementation. This work will benefit all of campus since our goal is to make course transitions as seamless as possible. As you know, we will offer all courses in Canvas in Summer 2026.
  2. For all other faculty teaching in Spring 2026, you will see youremptySpring course shells (and eventually, students) in Canvas soon, if you do not already. These are not your migrated courses, and no students will see your course shells in Canvas unless you publish them.I ask that you please do not publish any course unless you are a part of the Canvas early adopter program. These empty shells are another great opportunity for you toimport and/or create content. You can also use this time toto learn more about Canvas tools and functionality.
  3. Finally, I would like to introduce ourCanvas Faculty Champions! These dedicated faculty are available to offer your valuable peer-to-peer guidance and support as you learn more about Canvas and prepare for your own course migrations. I encourage you to reach out to your college champion if you have questions or would like to discuss anything related to the new LMS or our implementation. Special thanks to the colleagues below.
  • Mark Abolins(Geosciences), College of Basic & Applied Sciences
  • Jenn Caputo(Health & Human Performance), College of Behavioral & Health Sciences
  • MichelleConceison(Recording Industry), Scott Borchetta College of Media & Entertainment
  • Eric Detweiler(English), College of Liberal Arts
  • Ronda Henderson(Marketing), Jennings A. Jones College of Business
  • Denise Quintel(User Services), James E. Walker Library
  • Everett Singleton(Womack Educational Leadership), College of Education

Our teams are here to support you and your students, and to help ensure that you are ready our Canvas transitions.

Thanks to so many who were able to attend our Canvas session on Monday. You were a fantastic audience, and we heard some great questions, comments, and feedback. If you couldn’t make it, then I invite you to review the and.

Three quick items to share today:

  1. F25 teaching faculty can now log in to Canvas with their MTSU single-sign-on credentials at . As noted on slide 20 of the linked slide deck:
    • These are “empty” course shells to use as a “sandbox” for getting to know Canvas features, navigation, and functionality. These are not your migrated courses!
    • You can import content from D2L, develop new content, and more in these course shells.
    • You can use these sandbox courses in conjunction with other available resources on ourwebsiteor in one or more of our.
  2. Speaking of training/support resources, you can now access the , in which you can self-enroll (in the Canvas environment).
  3. I encourage you to review this , which you can use to work with content in Canvas, import content from D2L, or otherwise experiment in Canvas. Remember that this is only your first access to the new LMS, so these are not your migrated courses. Our teams will provide significant additional support in migrating/converting courses. More information to come about this important work.

Special thanks to Cheri Webster, Trey Martindale, Lauren Neal, and the rest of our training crew for the resources linked above, and for continually developing and delivering top-notch faculty training and support.

September 23, 2025 – Email #1 /canvas/2025/09/23/september-23-2025-email-1/ Tue, 23 Sep 2025 13:00:53 +0000 /canvas/?p=1037 Good Morning, Faculty Colleagues –

I hope your Fall semester is off to a great start.

I’m writing with general updates on the coming LMS transition, along with important dates and resources for faculty. Please know that faculty training, resources, and support remain our top priorities as we prepare to migrate courses to Canvas. As you will see, much of what I describe below reflects these priorities.

  1. As you may already know, I will serve as the primary point of contact for faculty throughout the Canvas implementation. Dr. Trey Martindale (Associate Vice Provost for Online Learning) will also play an important leadership role throughout this work, and you may exchange messages with other implementation team members at one point or another. But I encourage you to please contact me or Trey if you have questions or other discussion items. We’re happy to help, listen, and/or learn.
  2. Please take a few minutes to review theCanvas transition website, includingtimelines,FAQs, and valuabletraining resources. In short, Canvas will support all Summer and Fall 2026 courses at MTSU, and our team will work with a small group of early adopters for Spring 2026. If you have other questions that you’d like to suggest for the FAQs, please!
  3. I’m finalizing a list of Canvas Champions for each academic college. These colleagues will serve as college points of contact for Canvas questions, support, and training. I’ll include that list of colleagues as part of my next e-mail update, and they will be ready to assist soon.
  4. The Center for Teaching & Mentoring will serve as the Canvas training hub throughout and following our LMS implementation, and I’m happy to announce multiple upcoming training dates in early October!!! These blended (on-ground and remote) sessions will provide faculty with a first look at Canvas, along with an introduction to basic Canvas functionality. Visit the  for more information.
  5. I’ve scheduled aCanvas Update & Discussion Session for Monday, 9/29, from 2-3 PMfor faculty who would like to hear more about the Canvas implementation. This will include a general update of where we’ve been and where we are going, followed by some time dedicated to Q&A. We’ll conduct this via Zoom, which you can access. If you have a question that you’d like to pose for this session, feel free totoday!
  6. Finally, what can faculty dotodayto prepare for Canvas?Well, a lot, actually. I encourage you to access theandsites for a variety of faculty resources. You can also complete this self-paced(with badge), or thisfrom LinkedIn Learning. There is also thison YouTube, which covers a range of topics, features, and operations.

Canvas is a collaborative project involving Academic Affairs and the MTSU Information Technology Division. Special thanks to Yvette Clark and the ITD team, especially the Center for Technologies & Training, for all their work so far, and much more to come.

I am committed to keeping you updated on our Canvas transition, so please keep an eye out for subsequent e-mails with additional information and upcoming key dates for faculty. In the meantime, don’t hesitate to contact me and/or Trey if you have questions.

Have a great week!
