Good Morning, Faculty Colleagues –

See below for the final installment of Canvas updates for faculty this academic year! I encourage you to review our archived 2025-26 Canvas updates as well for tons of valuable information.

  1. Remember that all MTSU courses will be delivered in Canvas beginning this summer. Please don’t delay your course preparations. You’ll want plenty of time to work on upcoming courses and give our support team time to assist you, if needed.
    1. If you’re teaching this summer, make sure you review Dr. Vannatta-Hall’s message regarding summer courses, and take note of the Canvas Training Intensive Retreat on May 12-15.
    2. Note that the last day students can access D2L is May 15, 2026. Faculty will have access to D2L through December 31, 2026.
  1. Our Canvas team is working hard to resolve technical issues associated with D2L course archiving. I’ll share more details once we have a contract in place. Rest assured, we still have several months before faculty access to D2L ends.
  2. Please note that course cross-listing in Canvas is not permitted (even for different sections of the same course), since altering LMS data negatively impacts course data throughout Academic Affairs data systems (a persistent technical issue, even in D2L). As a result, all cross-listed courses should be listed accordingly in Banner, not in Canvas.
  3. We continue to have a range of supportԻ resources available, and I encourage you to explore them on our .

As always, if you have questions, please contact me directly or e-mail our team at canvas@mtsu.edu. You can also visit the Canvas implementation website for more information regarding timelines, Canvas resources, , and more.

Wishing you a smooth end to the Spring semester, and I’ll see many of you at graduation this weekend!site for more information regarding timelines, Canvas resources, , and more.

  3. The batch of K16 custom course migrations requested by March 6 is now available in . K16 migrated courses are clearly indicated as “Migration” on the course card in your Canvas account.
    • Even if your course has been migrated by K16, it will not be “ready to go.” Faculty need to review their migrated course content, quizzes, assessments, etc., and choose a layout for their courses in Canvas. (e.g., One of our Canvas Early adopters spent 10 hours working on her K16 migrated fully online course for spring 2026.)
    • Still need your course(s) migrated from D2L to Canvas? We have some space for additional K16 course migrations, but the migration process takes 4-6 weeks. The last round of migration requests (a very limited number) is due by June 12th, and because of the late date, we cannot guarantee that these courses will be migrated before the Fall 2026 term begins. If you’d like to submit a request for the final course migration, complete the  for EACH course that needs to be migrated; you will need the course URL, Instructor name, M number, and Department for each course.
    • If you’d like to migrate your own course content from D2L to Canvas, refer to the guidelines in this pdfԻ.
  4. Summer and Fall 2026 course shells are visible in . These are just shells, without course content, but you can import and build content anytime.
  5. Students (including all GAs and GTAs) cannot access D2L after May 15, 2026, but faculty permissions are active through December 31, 2026.
  6. You may refer to the previous Canvas transition update emails here.

When looking for your migrated course, look for the Migration term listed on the course card in the Canvas Dashboard.

Good Afternoon, Faculty Colleagues –

See below for the most recent monthly installment of Canvas updates for faculty. It’s an exciting time as work accelerates in advance of our Summer 2026 go-live.

  1. The final batch of K16 custom course migrations will begin very soon (with course availability in mid-April).
    1. If you have a complex course to suggest for custom migration, please complete and submit this  by Friday, March 6. Availability is limited, so please submit only complex courses with significant content. Our team will prioritize submissions and accommodate as many as possible.
    2. Remember that due to limited resources, custom migration services are not available for all D2L courses. Recent course shells using multiple LMS features, along with MTSU Online courses, will undergo custom migration. Otherwise, you should move courses and content using the guidelines in this pdf and .
  1. Summer and Fall 2026 course shells are now visible in . These are just shells, without course content, but you can import content anytime. Pdf and  for how to do so are available in the faculty resources on the Canvas website.

January 15, 2026 – Email #5 /canvas/2026/01/15/january-15-2026-email-5/ Thu, 15 Jan 2026 15:07:06 +0000 /canvas/?p=1059

Good Morning, Faculty Colleagues –

I’m sharing two last-minute Canvas reminders as we begin the new year:

  1. You should deliver your Spring 2026 courses in D2L if you are not registered with the Canvas team as a Spring 2026 early adopter.
    • You will now see empty Spring 2026 course shells in Canvas, but students will not. These shells enable you to experiment with content creation, importing, and design, along with LMS navigation (as noted in my previous updates, which you can review here). They are not live courses.
  2. Please communicate clearly and directly with students regarding LMS content, since a very limited number of MTSU courses will be hosted in Canvas for Spring 2026. As you may remember, our early adopters will help us identify problems or issues that may affect other faculty in Summer 2026 and beyond.

If you have questions, please contact me directly or e-mail our team at canvas@mtsu.edu. You can also visit the Canvas implementation website at  for more information regarding timelines, Canvas resources, , and more.

Best wishes for a smooth start to the Spring 2026 semester!

Greetings, Faculty Colleagues –

I hope that the semester is winding down smoothly, and I hope to see many of you at commencement this weekend.

Our Canvas implementation is quickly accelerating, and I’m sending along one final set of updates for 2025.

  1. About 225 early adopter courses are live in Canvas for Spring 2026, so special thanks to those of you getting a head start on our LMS transition. For everyone else, all MTSU courses will be in Canvas starting in Summer 2026.
  2. I strongly encourage you to dive into Canvas workshops, navigation, resources, and courses available through the Canvas project website, specifically the faculty resources page. While Canvas is increasingly intuitive with consistent use, do not underestimate the learning curve involved for many of us. In short, some dedicated time daily or weekly will go a long way. The Center for Teaching & Mentoring has already hosted and archived a range of , with much more coming in Spring 2026.
  3. Finally, you can find details regarding Canvas course migration/imports . Many of you have asked specifically about how your courses will be impacted for Summer/Fall 2026, and this document provides a great summary.

That’s all for 2025! I wish each of you a restful and celebratory holiday season. Thank you for all that you do for MTSU and our faculty and students. Feel free to contact me anytime that I can assist.

November 4, 2025 – Email #3 /canvas/2025/11/04/november-4-2025-email-3/ Tue, 04 Nov 2025 20:00:58 +0000 /canvas/?p=1014

Good Afternoon, Faculty Colleagues –

Happy November to everyone! Thanks to all who have attended one of our many Canvas training sessions!

Remember that you can always get Canvas information on our website, and details on upcoming training (along with previously recorded sessions) at the .

Three quick updates:

  1. Our campus is right in the thick of Canvas course migrations, with a focus on our 60+ “early adopters” teaching over 100 courses in Canvas for Spring 2026. This important group of faculty will help identify opportunities for improvement in course migrations and the broader Canvas implementation. This work will benefit all of campus since our goal is to make course transitions as seamless as possible. As you know, we will offer all courses in Canvas in Summer 2026.
  2. For all other faculty teaching in Spring 2026, you will see your empty Spring course shells (and eventually, students) in Canvas soon, if you do not already. These are not your migrated courses, and no students will see your course shells in Canvas unless you publish them. I ask that you please do not publish any course unless you are a part of the Canvas early adopter program. These empty shells are another great opportunity for you to import and/or create content. You can also use this time to  to learn more about Canvas tools and functionality.
  3. Finally, I would like to introduce our Canvas Faculty Champions! These dedicated faculty are available to offer your valuable peer-to-peer guidance and support as you learn more about Canvas and prepare for your own course migrations. I encourage you to reach out to your college champion if you have questions or would like to discuss anything related to the new LMS or our implementation. Special thanks to the colleagues below.
  • Mark Abolins (Geosciences), College of Basic & Applied Sciences
  • Jenn Caputo(Health & Human Performance), College of Behavioral & Health Sciences
  • Michelle Conceison (Recording Industry), Scott Borchetta College of Media & Entertainment
  • Eric Detweiler(English), College of Liberal Arts
  • Ronda Henderson (Marketing), Jennings A. Jones College of Business
  • Denise Quintel (User Services), James E. Walker Library
  • Everett Singleton (Womack Educational Leadership), College of Education
  • Holly Zolt (University Studies), University College

Our teams are here to support you and your students, and to help ensure that you are ready our Canvas transitions.

As always, contact us at canvas@mtsu.edu if we can assist, or you can e-mail me, Trey, or Cheri directly anytime.

Good Morning, Faculty Colleagues –

Thanks to so many who were able to attend our Canvas session on Monday. You were a fantastic audience, and we heard some great questions, comments, and feedback. If you couldn’t make it, then I invite you to review the and.

Three quick items to share today:

  1. F25 teaching faculty can now log in to Canvas with their MTSU single-sign-on credentials at . As noted on slide 20 of the linked slide deck:
    • These are “empty” course shells to use as a “sandbox” for getting to know Canvas features, navigation, and functionality. These are not your migrated courses!
    • You can import content from D2L, develop new content, and more in these course shells.
    • You can use these sandbox courses in conjunction with other available resources on our website or in one or more of our .
  2. Speaking of training/support resources, you can now access the ,in which you can self-enroll (in the Canvas environment).
  3. I encourage you to review this , which you can use to work with content in Canvas, import content from D2L, or otherwise experiment in Canvas. Remember that this is only your first access to the new LMS, so these are not your migrated courses. Our teams will provide significant additional support in migrating/converting courses. More information to come about this important work.

Special thanks to Cheri Webster, Trey Martindale, Lauren Neal, and the rest of our training crew for the resources linked above, and for continually developing and delivering top-notch faculty training and support.

As always, contact our team at canvas@mtsu.edu if we can assist, or you can e-mail me, Trey, or Cheri directly anytime.

September 23, 2025 – Email #1 /canvas/2025/09/23/september-23-2025-email-1/ Tue, 23 Sep 2025 13:00:53 +0000 /canvas/?p=1037

Good Morning, Faculty Colleagues –

I hope your Fall semester is off to a great start.

I’m writing with general updates on the coming LMS transition, along with important dates and resources for faculty. Please know that faculty training, resources, and support remain our top priorities as we prepare to migrate courses to Canvas. As you will see, much of what I describe below reflects these priorities.

  1. As you may already know, I will serve as the primary point of contact for faculty throughout the Canvas implementation. Dr. Trey Martindale (Associate Vice Provost for Online Learning) will also play an important leadership role throughout this work, and you may exchange messages with other implementation team members at one point or another. But I encourage you to please contact me or Trey if you have questions or other discussion items. We’re happy to help, listen, and/or learn.
  2. Please take a few minutes to review the Canvas transition website, including timelines,FAQs, and valuable training resources. In short, Canvas will support all Summer and Fall 2026 courses at MTSU, and our team will work with a small group of early adopters for Spring 2026. If you have other questions that you’d like to suggest for the FAQs, please !
  3. I’m finalizing a list of Canvas Champions for each academic college. These colleagues will serve as college points of contact for Canvas questions, support, and training. I’ll include that list of colleagues as part of my next e-mail update, and they will be ready to assist soon.
  4. The Center for Teaching & Mentoring will serve as the Canvas training hub throughout and following our LMS implementation, and I’m happy to announce multiple upcoming training dates in early October!!! These blended (on-ground and remote) sessions will provide faculty with a first look at Canvas, along with an introduction to basic Canvas functionality. Visit the  for more information.
  5. I’ve scheduled a Canvas Update & Discussion Session for Monday, 9/29, from 2-3 PM for faculty who would like to hear more about the Canvas implementation. This will include a general update of where we’ve been and where we are going, followed by some time dedicated to Q&A. We’ll conduct this via Zoom, which you can access . If you have a question that you’d like to pose for this session, feel free to ٴǻ岹!
  6. Finally, what can faculty do today to prepare for Canvas? Well, a lot, actually. I encourage you to access the  and  sites for a variety of faculty resources. You can also complete this self-paced  (with badge), or this  from LinkedIn Learning. There is also this  on YouTube, which covers a range of topics, features, and operations.

Canvas is a collaborative project involving Academic Affairs and the MTSU Information Technology Division. Special thanks to Yvette Clark and the ITD team, especially the Center for Technologies & Training, for all their work so far, and much more to come.

I am committed to keeping you updated on our Canvas transition, so please keep an eye out for subsequent e-mails with additional information and upcoming key dates for faculty. In the meantime, don’t hesitate to contact me and/or Trey if you have questions.

Have a great week!
