{"id":397,"date":"2025-03-21T14:28:59","date_gmt":"2025-03-21T14:28:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mtsu.edu\/mtengage\/?page_id=397"},"modified":"2026-09-20T16:15:27","modified_gmt":"2026-09-20T16:15:27","slug":"engage-in-your-community-award","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.mtsu.edu\/engage\/engage-in-your-community-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Engage in Your Community Award"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this award, you are asked to reflect on the campus or community experiences that have enhanced your college learning in a Sway ePortfolio<em>.&nbsp;<\/em>Such experiences might include service learning, civic engagement, community service or other volunteerism, internships\/externships, campus activities, and\/or student organizations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"x__VHf853x92jVhka\">&nbsp;Up to three $1000 awards will be given to students who are making a difference in their communities. Strong candidates will demonstrate the connections between their engagement and understanding of who they are as an aspiring professional and engaged citizen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All current students who have completed one Engage course and are in good standing are eligible to apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How to Apply<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul id=\"_xbCVCz7bVqMHAp\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Entries must be completed in Sway.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All entries must include at least one photo.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The deadline to apply is March 8, 2026.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Winners will be announced by April 1.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Winners will be recognized at the Engage Spring Reception on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Entries must be submitted at <strong>https:\/\/mtsu.ca1.qualtrics.com\/jfe\/form\/SV_8j3bWuKs2iLW742<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">View the sample Sway&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sway.cloud.microsoft\/ZMgM4ccoNbCtAEd1?ref=Link\">https:\/\/sway.cloud.microsoft\/ZMgM4ccoNbCtAEd1?ref=Link<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">All entires should include the following components: <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Engagement Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wac.colostate.edu\/docs\/books\/writingspaces4\/holmes.pdf\">In Public Writing for Social Change<\/a>, Writing Studies scholar Ashley Holmes defines&nbsp;an <strong>academic&nbsp;citizen<\/strong> as &#8220;someone who takes the writing and research we do in college and puts it to practical and civic use in our communities in the hopes of contributing toward positive social change.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Part One<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who are you as an academic citizen?<\/strong> How have you taken what you have learned at MTSU and put it to practical use in your community in hopes of contributing to positive social change?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Part Two <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"_iOR3buLvHUpYmv\">Choose <strong>ONE<\/strong> of the three areas below to demonstrate who you are as an academic citizen. Responses should demonstrate your sustained involvement and contributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"_spWUmfA52ebREm\">Prompts are provided to serve as a guide to assist you in telling your story. Your response does not need to address each question, nor should it be limited to only those questions addressed in the prompts. Such experiences might include student organizations, honor societies, or other campus activities not part of a course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul id=\"_fl2pCsA6CoAX1U\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Describe your participation in a campus experience or activity that had a service component. Why did you choose the experience? Who was involved? What did you do? How did you interact with others?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What were the most important things you learned from this experience? In what ways did you grow your knowledge of yourself as a person, a learner, an aspiring professional, and\/or a citizen?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why is what you learned in this experience significant or important to you?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How does what you learned from this experience relate to your educational and career goals or your discipline?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Did you use anything you learned in coursework you\u2019ve taken in this campus involvement?
