Foreign Languages, Spanish Concentration, B.A.

The Spanish concentration in the Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages is offered through the College of Liberal Arts at MTSU.

The ability to speak and understand another language or languages opens countless doors and expands one's view of the world. Each of our concentrations offers multiple opportunities for immersive study abroad. Spanish: The second-most widely spoken language in the world, Spanish opens as many doors in the United States as it does in any of the 21 countries in which it's the official language. Few other foreign languages enable its bilingual speakers to so immediately connect, interact and discover opportunities (both professional and personal) in the world around them. A major in Foreign Languages with a Spanish concentration consists of 39 semester hours (excluding 1010) and must include at least 20 hours of upper-division work. Before beginning the junior year, the student should file a degree plan with his or her advisor.

Students can join MTSU Spanish faculty on an annual immersion program in Cuba, or study Spanish in Mexico, Costa Rica or Spain. Their options are not limited to these trips 鈥 with a little extra planning and footwork, a student can also design his or her own unique study abroad experience.

Leaping language barriers

Leaping language barriers

Almost any job that calls for communicating with a wide range of people will have good reason to employ someone with Spanish-speaking skills. This is especially true in fields related to education and customer/client service fields. For example, after earning her B.A. in Spanish at MTSU in 2005, Sarafina Croft went on to complete her Master's degree in Secondary Education at Vanderbilt University and now works as a training specialist at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Leavenworth, Kansas.
