Become empowered to research learning and teaching in mathematics. Shape the future.
Mathematics and Science Education, Mathematics Education Concentration, Ph.D.
The Mathematics Education Concentration of the is designed to prepare individuals to conduct research on the teaching and learning of mathematics and to teach mathematics and mathematics education courses in post-secondary institutions. Students in the Mathematics Education Concentration develop substantial content mastery of graduate-level mathematics, the teaching and learning of mathematics, and mathematics education research as they complete coursework in the program. In addition, students engage in conducting mathematics education research as they work closely with mathematics education faculty conducting research in this area.
Graduates find employment in both institutions of higher education as well as mathematics education publishers, research firms, and other related businesses.
Students in the MSE program have the opportunity to customize their experience to meet their professional goals. Students will work closely with faculty mentors to narrow their dissertation research topic to one that is both current in the field and a topic of interest to the student.
Recent Dissertations in the Mathematics Education Concentration include:
- Collaborative creativity in undergraduate mathematics: Exploring student experiences of in-class collaborative proofing by Dr. Amanda Lake Heath under the direction of Dr. Sarah Bleiler-Baxter.
- The influence of teacher-student discourse on students' mathematics identity development in rual, secondary mathematics classrooms by Dr. Samantha Fletcher-Garcia under the direction of Dr. Alyson Lischka.
- Instructor perceptions of student example use and understanding in an introduction to proof course by Dr. Jordan Kirby under the direction of Dr. Sarah Bleiler-Baxter
