D2L to Canvas Tool Comparison

While D2L Brightspace and Canvas do similar things, they have different names for some tools, and the functionality can differ.
How to use this page: Look for the name of the tool you used in D2L in the list below to see what the corresponding tool is in Canvas and how it functions.

Attendance
In D2L, you must create an attendance register that contains the days or events for which attendance will be taken. Then, you can record the attendance for the student.
This tool does not connect to the Grades.

Attendance
In Canvas, go to the Attendance tool, and by default, you will see the student list and the date. You can select to mark people present (or other status). It automatically adds a Roll Call Attendance item to the grades. This is updated each time you mark someone present or absent. This can be done from a web browser or the Canvas Teacher app.
These can be viewed in a list view or a class seating chart view.
.

Calendar
In D2L, the Calendar link at the My Home level is global, but if you go into a course and select the Calendar link, it shows only items for that course.

Calendar
The Canvas calendar is a global calendar that contains all course calendars. You can select/deselect the calendars you want to see in the global calendar. All items and assessments added to a course will show on the calendar.
You can add additional events, assignments, and appointment Groups to allow people to sign up to meet/present directly in the calendar.
Canvas allows the creation of an Appointment Group to allow students to choose a time to meet with you, their group, or others.

Classlist
In D2L, the Classlist contains a list of the users in the course.
You can email the class or specific students, view their progress, groups, and edit accommodations for the student.

People
In Canvas, the People tool allows you to view the users in the course and set up Group Sets. You can view the student’s last date of activity and total activity in the course, as well as user details (including their profile, their course membership information, and you can set a last date attended and view any recent messages you have had with the student.) You can also view the Course Analytics for this student and see their Grade, Weekly Online Activity, and any communication you have had with the student.
To email the class, you would go to the Inbox on the global navigation and choose the course to email.
To set accommodations, you will do this in the Quiz tool. It can be done for the course or a specific quiz in the Moderate tab.

Content
In D2L, the content area allows you to link to new items, existing items, external links, and other tools in the system.
You can add dates and release conditions.
The usual setup is using Modules with Topics. The modules will indent based on whether they are a sub-module.

Modules
In Canvas, you can build content modules with different types of items such as assignments, quizzes, discussions, external URL, other pages, attached files, external tools, and text headers.
By default, the modules/links are visible to everyone in the course. Using the Assign To option, you can also make it available to specific people, groups, or sections.
To create a more structured look, you can indent items, but this is done manually.
You can add Requirements and Prerequisites to a module and its content to make a student move through the content in a sequential manner, similar to Release Conditions.

Content Overview
In D2L, a specific syllabus tool doesn’t exist, but most people use the Content Overview or a Getting Started module in the content area to post their syllabus.

Syllabus
In Canvas, there is a specific Syllabus tool in the navigation menu. At the top, it allows you to either enter information or attach a file in the Rich Content Editor.
Also on this page is a Course Summary that has an automatically generated list of all the assessments and modules with due dates in the course. You can turn this summary off if you like, or hide the tool if you plan to post the syllabus elsewhere.

Course Home
In D2L, the Course Home page is a widget-based page that can be built to show different types of widgets with different information available. The navigation bar is at the top with levels of navigation that can be edited, which means each course can be different. These options can be edited in the Edit Course area under Homepages and Navigation & Themes.

Home
In Canvas, the Home area can be a web page or a link to specific areas in the course. By default, a blank course will link to the Modules area.
When viewing the Home area, faculty can select the Choose Home Page button to the right and select from the following options: Course Activity Stream, Pages Front Page (must have created a page in Pages and selected to Use as Front Page), Course Modules, Assignments List, or Syllabus.
You can also import content from here, choose to add an announcement, or view course analytics.

Discussions
In D2L, discussions are set up using a Forum/Topic structure. You must have at least one Forum that houses the specific discussion topics. These can be anonymous, have date restrictions, release conditions, group/section restrictions, completion restrictions, and can be associated with grades and/or rubrics.

Discussions
In Canvas, you can set up Discussion topics individually. They do not have a forum/topic structure. Some options available include graded checkpoint settings and peer review options.
The discussion can be set as a graded discussion, and rubrics can be attached by selecting the discussion, and then the three-dot menu to the right and choosing Add Rubric.

Dropbox
In D2L, the Dropbox tool allows you to set up different “folders” for students to complete. It can be a group or individual assignment, graded or not, have date restrictions, attached files, release conditions, special access, options to choose the type of submission (file and/or text submission, on paper or observed in person), file restrictions (how many and types), and a rubric attached.

Assignments
In Canvas, the Assignments tool is a bit more. It includes Assignments, but also includes all other types of graded assessments. So, all graded assignments, quizzes, discussions, and attendance are listed.
You can create assignment groups that organize the assessments by type and assign them a percentage of the total score, if you want weighted grades. This feeds directly to the grades area.
You can create assignments with similar options to those in D2L. This includes whether it is graded, the type of submissions that are acceptable, file restrictions, Turnitin integration, who can see it, date restrictions, and more.
Once an assignment is created, you can add a rubric by selecting it and choosing the button Create Rubric or Find Rubric below the assignment description. If you create the assignment through the assignment area, you will need to link it to the Modules.

Edit Course
In D2L, the administration area for the course is under the Edit Course area. Here you can edit basic course information as well as access all other tools. You can also edit the navigation bar and homepage, manage dates, and import/export content.

Course Settings
In Canvas, the administration area for the course is under the Settings link in the course navigation. This area is where you will update what your students can see in the course navigation. You can also view course statistics and import and export content. Other options available in the settings are adding a course image for the dashboard card, updating course dates, and enabling certain tools and settings for the course.
To add the recent announcements to your homepage, look for the Show recent announcements on Course home page setting and select the number to show. We recommend no more than three.

Grades
The Grades in D2L allow you to choose to build your gradebook first and then create the items that link to the grade item, or create the graded items directly through the tools.
The grading can be done through the grades area or the assessment area.

Grades/SpeedGrader
In Canvas, the items in Grades are only created through the creation of graded assessments and are grouped based on Assignment Groups in the Assignments area. You cannot manually create grade items in the Grades area.
Within the gradebook, there are settings you can set, like Late Policies, grade posting policy, and view options.
The grading can be done through the grades area or the assessment area, and also by using the SpeedGrader.

Manage Dates
In D2L, go to Edit Course and choose Manage Dates. This allows you to edit dates in all tools that have dates associated with them.

Edit Assignment Dates
In Canvas, you only have the option to update all graded assessment grades at one time. To do this, go to the Assignments link, select the three-dot icon by the +Assignment button and choose Edit Assignment Dates.
To move a group of assignments back collectively: Select multiple assignments and then choose Batch Edit. Here you can choose to Shift Dates or Remove Dates.

Manage Files
In D2L, if you upload any files or create an HTML file in the system, it will store them in the Manage Files area.

Files & Pages
In Canvas, you have two areas where content is stored: Files and Pages.
Files contain uploaded documents, images, and media, profile pictures, and user-specific files.
Pages contain all the created content that is used to present educational materials to students. These can include a combination of text, images, files, and links. Think of these as the user-friendly web pages you create to provide students with information. These are like the HTML pages you created in D2L.
, you will create a Page, make sure it is published, then choose to make it your home page.

Dashboard
The Dashboard shows the courses that someone is enrolled in and organizes them by whether they are Published or Unpublished.
The global navigation menu to the left contains user account information, courses (all), a global calendar, an Inbox for communication, a recent history of access, Canvas Commons, Studio, and Help links.
There is also a To Do list available that shows any items that are available to complete.

News
In D2L, there is a widget that can be shown on the Course Home that shows news items by the instructor. These are one-way communications to students in the course.

Announcements
In Canvas, the Announcements tool allows faculty to post announcements for the course.
There are additional options to allow participants to comment or allow liking of an announcement to allow for some interaction.
You cannot set DRAFT versions of announcements; you will need to enter a date in the future to prevent them from being released.

Notifications
In D2L, the notification settings are found by selecting your name at the top right of the window to open your account information and then choosing Notifications.

Notifications
In Canvas, these are found by selecting your Account icon in the global navigation bar to the left and choosing Notifications.
While Canvas has a set of default notifications applied to all accounts originally, users can update their own notifications.
If you install the mobile app, there will be options for push notifications available.

Question Library
In D2L, The Question Library allows you to create pools of questions that can be organized into folders and used in different quizzes. These questions can be added individually, all at once, or you can select to pull a specific number of questions randomly from the pool.
The Question Library is course-specific and can only be accessed in the course where it is housed.

Item Banks
In Canvas, the Item Bank allows you to create pools of questions, organize them into banks, and use them in different quizzes. These questions can be added individually, all at once, or you can select to pull a specific number of questions randomly from the pool.
The Item Bank is user-specific and can be shared with any course where the person has instructor access. It can also be shared with other people.

Quizzes
The Quiz tool in D2L allows you to create a quiz, add different types of questions, set dates, time limits, release conditions and restrictions, shuffle questions, shuffle answers, hide point values, set the number of attempts, choose whether to auto-publish grades, sync to the gradebook, and specify what feedback to appear to students.
All the options are available on one page.

The basic quiz info includes point value, assignment group, how to display the grade (points/percentage), enabling anonymous grading or anonymous instructor annotations, and assigning access. Once added, you can attach a rubric at this level.
The Build part of the quiz includes multiple tabs. The Build tab includes the ability to add a title and instructions as well as questions manually or from an Item Bank (similar to the Question Library).
The Settings tab allows you to enable many settings that include shuffling, a student access code, time limits, restrictions, allowing a calculator, custom feedback, attempts, and more.
The Moderate tab allows you to set accommodations for the course (applies to all quizzes) or the specific quiz.
The Reports tab will have some standard reports for the quiz.
The Exports tab allows you to create an export of the quiz.
To view quizzes as a student, it is best to go to the Quiz, select the Build area and choose Preview.
We do not have Classic Quizzes enabled so you will not see it as an option when creating a quiz.

Release Conditions
In D2L, you can set up Release Conditions on modules or topics in the Content area or in assessments by creating release conditions based on certain tools and condition details.
This allows you to force the student to complete one or more tasks prior to accessing future content or assessments.

Requirements/Prerequisites
In Canvas, you can set the course up so that students have to follow a progression. This can only be done in the Modules area.
Select to Edit the module, choose the Requirement button, and select whether they must Complete all or Complete one. There is an option to check “Students must move through the requirements in sequential order“. Below, choose the items and what the student needs to do to complete them. (For example: Mark done, Submit, etc).
Using the Requirements provides a view for students in the Modules that shows what they have completed, so they can view their progress.
To make sure future content doesn’t open before they have completed the requirements, you will need to choose to apply a Prerequisite based on the completion of the previous requirements.
You can also set dates on the modules to keep them from working too far ahead. Content will not open until the specified date, even if they completed the requirements.
You can only set requirements and prerequisites on modules and not on specific content items or assessments.
