Proctoring Best Practices

Clearly communicate your proctoring requirements.

Include the proctoring method, technology requirements, student responsibilities, and any fees or requirements in your syllabus and course materials.

Provide an alternative when possible.

Identify an alternative proctoring option for students who cannot use your primary method because of technology, internet access, location, or other circumstances.

Plan for students who are not local to campus.

For fully online courses, consider fully online proctoring options that allow students to complete assessments remotely.

Consider accessibility from the beginning.

Make sure your proctoring method can support students with approved accommodations and work with the Disability and Access Center when needed.

Give students time to prepare.

Let students know about proctoring requirements early and provide an opportunity to test required technology before a high stakes exam.

Have a plan for technical problems.

Establish what students should do if they experience internet, computer, software, or other technical problems during an exam.

Choose the proctoring method that fits the assessment.

Not every assessment requires the same level of proctoring. Consider the purpose, stakes, format, and learning objectives of the assessment when selecting a method.

Use the Campus Testing Center only when it is the best option.

The Testing Center is a limited resource primarily intended to support students with approved accommodations, make up or missed exams, and situations where other proctoring options are not available.

  • This method is not viable for students who do not live within a drivable distance of the MTSU campus and Geographically distant online students who cannot attend a face-to-face activity should be given an online option.

Instructor Procedures

  1. Create the activity in Canvas. Remember to add a password.

  4. Remind your students that they must present a photo I.D. when taking the exam. If an ID is not produced, the student will forfeit the opportunity to take the exam.
    • Early in the semester, reserve a room for your proctored activity.

    • The Faculty must be present for the proctored activity.
    • Inform students of the consequences of a missed activity.
    • Faculty can consider working with other faculty to proctor each other鈥檚 activities.

Students using the Testing Center

MTSU offers several ways to provide secure and effective proctoring for exams and other assessments. The Campus Testing Center is a valuable resource, but its limited space means it cannot accommodate large numbers of course exams each semester.

Faculty are encouraged to select the proctoring option that best fits their course and assessment needs. The Testing Center is primarily intended to support students with approved testing accommodations, students who need a make-up or missed exam, and situations where other proctoring options are not available.

For fully online courses, we encourage faculty to use a fully online proctoring option whenever possible. This provides students with a convenient way to complete their exams without requiring them to travel to campus and helps preserve Testing Center space for students who need it most.

Before scheduling an exam at the Campus Testing Center, please consider whether another proctoring option may be a better fit for your course and students.

Additional Alternative Proctoring Methods

1. Loaner Laptops or Equipment Access-(Contact the MTSU Library for more information).聽

    • Library or Community Resources. If students are near a public library or community center, they may have access to computers that support proctoring software.
    • Local College or University Partnerships. Some institutions allow visiting students to use their testing centers or computer labs.

    2. Flexible Testing Options

    • Alternative Assessments- Consider alternative assessments such as open-book projects, oral exams, or written assignments.

    3. Partnerships with Local Organizations

    • Public Libraries- Many libraries have computers available for public use, and some offer private rooms that could be used for proctored exams.
    • Workforce Development Centers- Some state or local job training centers have computer labs that may be available for student use.

    4. Employer-Based Testing

    • If a student is employed, some workplaces may allow them to take an exam using a company computer in a private setting. This is especially helpful for students in professional or technical fields.

    5. Proctoring at Military or Government Facilities

    • If students are active military, many bases offer proctoring services.

    6. If traditional proctored exams are not feasible, consider:

    • Oral exams via video call
    • Portfolio-based assessments
    • Timed essay responses submitted through the LMS
    • Project-based or case study assessments
