Canvas Integrations
Canvas supports different types of integrations with external resources using . These third-party tools can provide an enhanced user experience by allowing instructors to link to appropriate information for the students, such as publisher content, research resources, simulations, assignments, etc. There are also tools to help faculty build content, collaboration, and more.
Most integrations are currently active, but some will remain unavailable until the full transition to Canvas is complete. This is because certain tools cannot operate simultaneously across two platforms.

Who provides support for these integrations?
For support with third-party integrations, your best resource is typically the company or vendor that provides the tool. While MTSU may offer centralized assistance in certain cases, most issues are best addressed directly with the vendor first.

** These tools are either currently installed, but cannot be enabled on both D2L and Canvas at the same time, or we plan to install them at a later date. The goal is to have the integrations enabled and tested for use in the Summer 2026 semester.
Adding External Tools to Your Course
Assignments – External Tool
Can be used for graded items.
- Select the Assignments link in the course menu.
- Select the +Assignment button to add a new assignment.
- In the Submission-Type drop-down field, select External Tool.
- Click the Find button.
- Choose the external tool link from the list.
- You may need to sign in to the third-party tool at this point to select your content.
- Depending on the tool, you may want to select the Load in a new tab checkbox.
- Complete the additional assignment fields, click Save or Save & Publish.
Course Assignments Menu
Can be used for graded items.
- Select the Assignments link in the course menu.
- Select the three-dot icon to the right of the +Assignment button.
- Select the external learning tool from the list.
- You may need to sign in to the third-party tool at this point to select your content.
Course Navigation
Can be used for non-graded items.
- Select the Settings link on the course menu.
- Choose the Navigation tab.
- Scroll to the bottom to view the items that are currently hidden.
- Drag and drop the navigation item you would like to add to your menu to the top list.
- Click Save.
Modules – Add External Tool
Can be used for non-graded items.
- Select the Modules link in the course menu.
- Either add a new module, or you can add the link to an existing module.
- Click the plus icon at the top right of the module title.
- Select External Tool from the drop-down list.
- Choose the external tool link from the list.
- You can edit the name of the link the students will see in the Page Name field.
- Depending on the tool, you may want to select the Load in a new tab checkbox.
- Click Add Item
- Don’t forget to publish the item you added.
Rich Content Editor – Add App
Can be used for non-graded items.
The Rich Content Editor (RCE) is an online editing tool for creating content. It allows you to create content that is formatted and can contain hyperlinks, images, media, formulas, tables, and more. It can be used in the following tools: announcements, assignments, discussions, quizzes, pages, and syllabus.
- When in a tool that uses the RCE, place your cursor in the editing box.
- Select the Apps icon (looks like a plug)
- If you do not see the option in the initial expanded list, select the View All option to see all the available tools.
- Select the tool to integrate; the functionality will vary in terms of how you add the content to your course.
